A breakdown is much less stressful when the essentials are already in the trunk. Use this checklist to build your own kit or top up a ready-made one.
Be seen
- Reflective warning triangles or LED road flares
- A flashlight or headlamp with spare batteries
- A high-visibility vest
Get moving again
- Jumper cables or a charged portable jump starter
- Tire pressure gauge, a portable inflator and a tire plug kit
- Basic tools: adjustable wrench, screwdrivers, pliers, utility knife, duct tape and zip ties
- A tow strap (for recovery by a properly equipped vehicle)
Stay safe and comfortable
- First-aid kit, and any personal medication
- A vehicle-rated fire extinguisher, secured so it cannot roll
- Drinking water and non-perishable snacks – rotate them, cars get hot
- Blanket, rain poncho and work gloves
- A phone charging cable and a power bank
Check it twice a year
Replace used items, recharge jump starters and power banks, check the extinguisher gauge and swap out water and food. A good time is when the clocks change.
If you break down
Pull as far off the road as you can, switch on your hazard lights, and stay clear of traffic. On the freeway it is usually safest to stay inside with your seat belt on while you call for help.
