Most batteries fail without much warning. Knowing what to look for makes choosing the replacement quick.
Signs your battery is weak
- Slow or labored cranking, especially on cool mornings
- Battery or charging warning light
- Dim lights or electrical glitches at start-up
- Corrosion on the terminals or a swollen case
Reading the label
- Group size (for example 24F, 35, 48/H6) sets the dimensions and terminal layout. It must match your vehicle.
- CCA – cold cranking amps is starting power in cold weather. Meet or exceed your manual’s figure.
- RC – reserve capacity is how long the battery can run essentials if the charging system fails.
- Date code – buy the freshest stock available.
Flooded, EFB or AGM?
Many vehicles with start-stop systems or heavy electrical loads come with an AGM or EFB battery and need the same type as a replacement. Some vehicles also need the new battery registered with a scan tool – check your manual.
Heat is hard on batteries
Hot Southern California summers shorten battery life. Keep terminals clean and tight, and test your battery before long trips.
Recycle the old one
